Phone scams

Members of the public are warned against phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to be employed by the JSE.  These individuals ask members of the public for personal information, such as their income and physical and e-mail addresses.  They claim to represent the JSE and sometimes offer to provide training in trading shares to members of the public.  Should you receive an unsolicited call and are suspicious about the identity of the caller, you could take the individual’s name and contact details and contact the JSE on (011) 520-7000 to confirm whether the caller is in fact representing the JSE. In terms of section 4(2) of the Securities Services Act, 2004, it is an offense to behave in a manner which suggests or implies that there is some connection between a person and an exchange where no such connection in fact exists.
